The Turning captures a fleeting moment of movement—a woman turning gently into the moment, her hair and fabric following the motion around her. I was drawn to the quiet gesture of the figure and the feeling of movement that can exist within a still image.
Working with charcoal and acrylic, I allowed the expressive charcoal lines to remain visible throughout the composition. Loose, gestural marks suggest the movement of her hair and draped fabric, while delicate layers of acrylic bring warmth and softness to the figure. Rather than defining every detail, I wanted the lines and washes of color to work together, leaving portions of the image open and allowing the viewer's imagination to complete the story.
This piece is part of my continuing exploration of figurative work, movement, gesture, and the expressive quality of line. I love the balance between the spontaneity of charcoal and the subtle warmth of acrylic—where a few carefully placed marks can say as much as a fully rendered figure.
